Unfortunately, however, there is no easy quick fix to the paralyzing butterflies of public speaking nervousness. Now, before the profanities start to lace your otherwise bridled lips, here me out. The following are five ideas that will ensure a much better experience prior to and during your speaking experience:
First and certainly not least, a shot of whiskey to calm the nerves. Just kidding. I don’t even drink! Ok, I am serious now. Are you ready? Prepare, prepare, prepare, and then, prepare. This first idea is the most important element to ensuring the best possible outcome with your public speaking experience. If you are prepared there will be no need to fear–at least about whether or not you are actually prepared, and truthfully that is really the biggest element of public speaking: knowing what it is your talking about. Being prepared will help eliminate at least some of the stress associated with a pending speaking engagement or presentation. Be thorough in learning your material and the odds of success are pretty good.
Secondly, be specific in preparing for the audience you’ll be addressing. If your speaking to your colleagues think about them as you prepare your presentation. If your speaking to a bunch of nuns, you may want to take out any planned profanities. Remember, your message should be tailored to the audience you are going address in order to be fully prepared. If you don’t know your audience, you will not know how to keep them interested in your message and the odds of success will go down. Know your audience.
Thirdly, wear a funny costume to lighten to mood. Ok, don’t do that unless you are asked to. I just wanted to picture a speaker in a clown costume addressing a bunch of executives. What can I say, I’m a bit eccentric. Really though, dress appropriately for the type of presentation you will be giving. Looks are not the most important thing, but an audience does respond to a presenters appearance. We’ve all heard the cliche phrases “dress to impress” and “dress for the job you want”, and there is some truth to the reasoning behind these phrases. If you dress nicely and appropriately, your clothes will not be a distraction during your speech. Dress for success.
Fourth. In addition to knowing the material for your preparation, practice speaking. Memorizing your presentation as much as possible will help you engage the audience more and make you and your material more interesting. Practicing a few jokes or adding a few funny stories will help ease any tension during the presentation. Work on delivery and perfect the prepared material in a way that is most comfortable for you, and you will be much more interesting. This fourth step is another way to avoid unnecessary distractions for the audience–you don’t want the audience hung up on constant stuttering or falling asleep because your reading directly from a written text. Perfect your delivery.
Lastly, have fun. Coming up with a few jokes or funny stories was mentioned in number four and that will help in making things fun for the speaker and the hearer. Beyond that, it will be your attitude that dictates whether or not you enjoy the experience. A positive and fun approach will help alleviate stress and will also make imperfections in style and delivery less notable. Think of ways to help yourself and the audience have more fun during your presentation. Come with a good attitude and make things fun.
Like most things in life, there is no shortcut to completely alleviating the stress associated with public speaking. The more one does it, however, the more experience one gains and usually with experience comes knowledge and with knowledge comes assurance. Remember that most people feel some nervousness from speaking in public, and it is a completely normal thing. Prepare and work hard, and things will come
